Students and faculty at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame were in mourning Tuesday after learning that Davis Cooper, who played football for the Knights last season and was a freshman at Grinnell College, was beaten and killed while walking along. Interstate 80 near Altona, Iowa.
The Notre Dame football team held a meeting on Tuesday morning and the players were informed of Cooper’s death. His brother is a sophomore in the team.
“It’s horrible,” said Notre Dame coach Joe McNab. “He was a great boy, a good leader, and very smart. Everyone on campus loved him.”
School counselors were provided. It will include a school-wide mass previously scheduled for All Saints Day memorial services for Cooper, 18.
Initial reports of the accident did not include a reason for Cooper to drive along the highway.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound quarterback had 15 single tackles and seven assists as well as 3.5 tackles for a loss, including 1.5 sacks.
